I'm not cutting this because this is very important to me.

A couple years ago, my friend M introduced me to this amazing animated show called Avatar: The Last Airbender. I was visiting him, he showed me the first episode, and I ended up watching something like four or five episodes in a row before we went for dinner.

Why was I hooked? I was 22 years old at the time, and it was the first time I had ever seen an American cartoon that had dark-skinned characters opening the shot, where their skin color was just part of them and not something to be "A special teaching moment for the white kids", and they were hilarious kids who didn't get killed off. Katara and her brother Sokka had me in the first five minutes.

They were heroes, they coded as Eskimo/Inuit/some flavor of First Nations and their fantasy world drew me in. Aang is a young boy trapped in the ice, they rescue him, and I saw him and was all "jfaojra he's adorable and he looks like a monk-let!"

This was an amazing world with different cultures that I could see were based on East, South, Southeast Asian, Tibetan, First Nations and Native American Indian, and Pacific Islander cultures. I learned from the community that the (white) creators were dedicated to accurately portraying those parts they drew from, and they didn't exoticize them, and they didn't screw it up. *_* This was the characters' world and they lived in it and it wasn't like anyone drawing attention to how cool and Asian it was. *__*

It was an animated show NOT, for once, based on Western/European aesthetics and cultures, and wasn't full of wince-worthy crappy kung fu wannabes. This had martial arts styles I (and my friend M) could actually recognize! :D

And then I learned the movie was coming out. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan. And here is what the initial casting (not final, I hope hope hope it's not final) looks like.

I just. I can't. This hurts so much to see. They whitewashed the leads. Completely. And it's like a slap to the face. It's already so rare to see people of color on screen, when a role calls for someone of "any race" it always seems to default to white. People of color get to be thugs, Magical Negroes or Mystical Asian/Indian Wise Man, the sidekicks, the token who gets killed off, the sexy native girl who snarks back and resists the Great White Hero but gets won over and falls in love with him anyway, etc. etc. And now this is a chance to have a full of cast of POC, with awesome roles that aren't stereotypical, for a smart show that has already won over kids and 'grownups' of every age, race and ethnicity.

I call bullshit. Complete bullshit on Hollywood, that you have to have a white face to sell to white audiences. First assuming that the only audience that matters is white, which makes me a nonentity, and then condescending to white people that they're so dumb that they won't watch anything with people that *gasp* don't look like them. Like I've been doing ALL MY LIFE.

You know what's really kind of a shock? Shyamalan is Indian, and he got interested in the project because his daughter wanted to dress up as Katara. Think of all the kids who love this show, who are people of color and get to see characters who look at least a little bit like them, and learn that Hollywood is saying, "No. You don't count, you don't matter."

Once the Christmas retail rush calms a little I'm going to be writing a letter as in the link below, believe you me. Please spread this around, it's not "just a kids show," it's about sending a message that we can't stand for this sort of institutional racism. It's going to be yellowface, people! Orientalism at it's finest!

In bullets, because I'm scattered like that.

1) Went to the dentist last Thursday, finally making use of the dental coverage. Found out that I had three cavities, one of them in my upper left wisdom tooth. Which I had thought was sprouting extra bits of tooth since December. Had it pulled, and what do you know-- it was. I have mutant wisdom teeth! Will scan and post at some point. :P

2) That dental office was cooool. The xray thing? Wasn't actually bits of xray film stuck in my mouth. It was a sensor, and the dentist showed me my teeth on the laptop immediately afterwards. So cool.

3) My brother is graduating his special needs post-graduate program next week. Yay! We went to the dinner-dance thing tonight. Tasty catered food, actually (I declare it's better than some of the weird catered stuff I've had at Scripps when it was trying to be swanky).

4) Re: his graduation, he invited me to go to Great America with him this past Tuesday. It was fun, though for various reasons I ended up going back alone to meet up with his classmates and teacher for a while. Ahhh, it was fun, even though I went on most of the rides by myself. The rollercoasters were such a rush! And since it was in the middle of the week, despite all the busloads of schoolkids, it was relatively sparsely populated. Short lines at nearly everything, though the Rapids ride was a 20-minute wait and disappointingly tame. Vertigo yay! Flight Deck yay! Psycho Mouse yay! (I love that feeling of almost going over the edge, haha) No spinny rides for me though. @_@

I want to go back at some point with friends, I think. ^_^

5) Work is...interesting. I'm being challenged every day, learning how to manage and motivate people. It's been a rocky ride, that's for sure. I screw up a whole lot, and I'm hoping like hell I'm learning fast enough to keep up. ^^;;; But I have really sweet customers, not nearly the number of spoiled picky people as in LG, but a few crazies and a few odd folks with entitlement complexes, but you get that everywhere.

6) Today marks my 1 year anniversary in Arashi/JE fandom. \o/ I kinda can't believe it. It's the longest I've been continuously in one fandom, because usually I'll be in one for five or six months at most neck deep and reading fic and downloading canon like crazy, and then it'll taper off. Then again, all my previous fandoms have been manga, anime, books and TV shows. With a fandom like Arashi, where 'canon' is continuously being produced and shared, well. :P I blame it all on [livejournal.com profile] mousapelli. :D :D :D

7) All my best to you loves. ♥ Even if I suck at commenting or otherwise keeping in touch, know that you're in my thoughts and I wish you well.

I've survived my first week as manager! I've scheduled myself the day off Sunday! \o/

And all in all, not horrible. Narrowly averted a personnel crisis, spent the first three days trying to figure out why our printer was leaving scratches on photographs (and solved it, I hope *crosses fingers*), was up to my elbows in processor racks cleaning them out in the course of solving the above problem, sold a couple little cameras (>.<) and delegated training of new folks to the veteran personnel. I'm alive. *flop*

To steal a line from [livejournal.com profile] mousapelli, I think, it's kinda hard to rebel against The Man when you are The Man. It sucks. I was forcibly reminded of that my first two days. My brain is a crazy, twisty place, in that I've spent a fair amount of time being anti-corporate America, and cognizant of the fact that capitalism and the continued health and welfare of human beings are two relatively mutually exclusive concepts. And yet, and yet, as soon as I became a manager, I kinda forgot that. Somebody needs to kick my hard in the pants. A lot. I owe a lot to my mom for helping me figure things things out the first night I came back, so that I wouldn't do anything irreparably stupid.

So yes. People, please tell me when I am being corporately stupid. :\

And below the cut, I shall meander on about fandom ^_^ )

Love to everybody, hope you're doing well, since I'm bad at keeping in touch. If you made it through all that tl;dr since I'm in the habit of talking a lot, hats off to you! :P
rhythmia: (Default)
This is sort of for my personal log (since my memory sucks sometimes) and for the amusement and edification of all bystanders watching this car wreck. XD Written sort of in flowchart/bulletpoint style, because I'm trying to wean myself from writing humongous endless paragraphs. :P Also a note: I'm not that stalkery, really! I'm just trying to be complete in my links, and to see if I can lure anyone of you darlings into my fandoms. XDDDDD

~*~ So I'm somewhere between a fandom butterfly and a fandom wolf; I'll change fandoms every so often but I'll keep them for a long time and go back to them from time to time. For my purposes, I'm tracing this as far back as when I got into Stargate: Atlantis fandom two and a half years ago (fall 2005) which I blame entirely on [livejournal.com profile] yaviasad. It's adventuring! In Space! With Pseudoscience and Gay Gay Subtext! That and the strong sense of Team feeling completely pulled me in.

~*~> And what do I do in a fandom? Search out the good fanfic, of course. The marvelous thing about SGA fandom is that writers and artists have flocked to it from lots of other fandoms, so there's almost a surfeit of riches in terms of amazing stuff to read, great art to giggle or sigh over, podfic, and so forth. In my bouncing around, I landed on the lj of [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine, a hilarious person who recommends fics, fanvids, manga series, lots of things. Her recs are so fun (and funny) to read! About the middle post of this tag in July or August 2006 was at the top when I found her in September, which launched me into another fandom.

~*~> Hikaru no Go! ([livejournal.com profile] erjika will tell you that I'm always the last to get into a fandom, because when I found this one I remembered some of the art I'd seen as the header on her blog. About, oh, six or seven years ago. ^^;;; It's a series about a boy who is possessed by a thousand-year-old ghost so he can play Go, an ancient strategy game. But really, it's about how this boy Hikaru meets a Go-obsessed twelve-year-old named Akira, gets him as a rival, develops passion for something, and grows up. (It's neat the way this manga covers time, by the time it's over they're about sixteen/seventeen). There's heated rivalry! Silly ghosts! Angst! Did I mention rivalry to the point that they're practically married?

~*~> Through this fandom I found [livejournal.com profile] mousapelli, whose Hikaru no Go fic, among other fandoms, can be found here and also on her lj. You know how there are some authors whose writing you'll read no matter what, regardless of fandom, because their writing is just that good/entertaining/captivating/alive? From her HnG fic I started browsing her other stuff, and the top couple of posts on her lj include You Can't Help But Grow Hot, fic of Arashi + concert high. I had no idea who these people were, but the immediacy of the writing, the way they felt concrete and real, the nakamaship and team feeling all just pulled me in.

\/\/-> And here's where I take a little detourand I cut because it's already getting long and afoiajfljroagor )

~*~> So yes, that there's the path of my doom. These five guys are hilarious, dorky, really care about each other even (especially) when whacking each other for saying dumb/pervy/ridiculous things, smoking hot, and even though they're definitely not the most talented singers and dancers of the talent agency, for sure they've got a lot of heart. (And are very, very entertaining. XD)

Maybe if I'm bored I'll insert a helpful flowchart. ^_^ I hope you loves were entertained and possibly intrigued, but I'll settle for amused at my expense while I flail over boys dancing over rainbows. With sparkles and shiny.

Originally posted here at my lovely librarian [livejournal.com profile] artemidora's call for manga series to build a core collection at her library.

Just a looooong ramble about various manga series that I loved and that I think would make a great starter collection for a library, and perhaps y'all out in LJ-land might appreciate it. And please please please feel free to babble back at me (and [livejournal.com profile] artemidora too) about manga series. I love sharing squee. ^_^ <3

Babbling and recommendations under the cut. Please to be noting I copied it right out of my commenting, so ignore the weird references XD )

Why is it that lately, the only people who hit on me are sketchy drunk white guys? I'm vaguely concerned that this says something about me. >.<

In happier news, my life is full of nature, friends, absolutely delicious food, and me actually having a social life instead of being perpetually parked in front of the computer. :P I hear you gasp, internets, but it's true. However, I will post properly once I have the energy and once I've got my pictures digitized. Yay for manual film cameras!

This is just a post to prove that I'm alive, really. ^^ One Piece art continues apace, slowly, because a lot of my fannish energy is currently invested in fangirling various Japanese and Korean dramas and Arashi. Whee for goofy boybands! Who have happy bouncy ghei music videos like Happiness! ^_^
rhythmia: (HAY BABY)
I live! I've got my OP fanart groove back! It got eaten by a period when the OP comms I hang out in and the journals I followed were relatively quiet, and then I was tired from work, and then my brain got eaten by Arashi (though not the rest of Jpop fandom quite yet, hopefully).

But now that the camera/photo developing retail business is in a bit of a slowdown because everyone's on vacation (it should get more busy in September, according to my boss) and the new!shiny!ghei!fandom grasp Arashi has on me has cooled off a little, my inspiration has returned! *dances, but with more flail and less frills and sparkles than Jpop boys*

I think I need somebody to flail with about Arashi, that might calm me down since until this point I've been mainlining youtube videos and capspam posts. The trouble is, like One Piece, there's just SO MUCH CANON possible to go through and enjoy. OP sucked me in for about four months before the flush of new fandom wore off, just because it took me that long to catch up on canon and what fandom had produced. When did OP come out? 1997? 1999? Arashi debuted in 1999 and besides their concerts they also do weekly shows filled with dorkery and nakamashippy goodness.

Now the point! Recordkeeping. Posted art to the anniversary contest in [livejournal.com profile] zosopp here and crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] onepieceyaoi here. Don't need to click on both since it's the same art unless you're interested in reading the comments (hopefully there will be comments! ^^;;)

It was fun drawing this. Got struck with inspiration and sketched it out in half an hour in bed. Inked it (I love my micron pens so much), then took my Crayola color pencils with me and spent about an hour and a half on and off coloring it in while waiting for the bus and also while on the bus. I'm much more satisfied with the color saturation this time compared with the nakama nap pile one.

Those who wish to understand what exactly has eaten my brain can look at the content of the actual post. Warning, massively picspammy and dial-up unfriendly.

This is a completely pointless post other than for squeeing. XD Because a couple folks on my flist have posted a Golden Compass meme for getting your own daemon, and I'm all, what? And yaaaaaaay there's gonna be a movie OMG. I love the "His Dark Materials" series, and the trailer looks gorgeous. The CG's a little interesting but I totally squealed when I saw Iorek Byrnison cross the screen, hehehe. I hope hope hope the film doesn't butcher the books, but it looks good. Wow Nicole Kidman looks perfect for Mrs. Coulter, and Serafina Pekkala eeeeeee she's so pretty and she *flies*. Saw some concept art and immediately identified it as the river by Oxford where the Gypsies moor their houseboats and that's a good sign, hee. And there's an alethiometer on the movie website to play with! Eeeeeeeeee....

That's all. ^_^ I read the first two books when I first got into fantasy novels in middle school, and the third book was nowhere near being done at that point, and in fact I didn't read The Amber Spyglass until last year, but it was amazing and heart breaking and philosophically crazy and the end just...broke me. In a good way. ^^ Yeah, in terms of good British young adult/children's literature, this series blows HP away, completely out of the water, hehe. Blasphemy, I know. XD Read it! The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. *pimppimp*

I was reading someone's post about MacGuyver, and I finally realised why, when [livejournal.com profile] commodoremarie and [livejournal.com profile] yaviasad mentioned Jack O'Neill and how the actor was Macguyver, and I wondered whether that meant he was in a blue alien bodysuit, and the above mentioned always gave me the "what on earth are you smoking?" looks.

Right. Because I was confusing the show Macguyver, which is apparently a show about a guy who can build life-saving explosives out of a paper clip, chewing gum and an old tennis shoe, and which I have never watched, with Guyver, which I did watch a few parts of when I was in high school, and involved a guy in blue "biobooster armor" and fought, um, aliens? Here is something about the movie, but I distinctly remember watching a tv show...Aha! So it's an American movie based on a manga and anime of the same name, and apparently I just watched multiple showings... Here's kinda what Guyver looked like in his suit. *giggles* It looks kinda like Ultraman, no? :P

Ahahahaha imdb recommends that if you like this title, you might also like "Leprechaun 4: In Space" XDDDDD

Yes, I'm slow. And easily amused. What?

So I was riding on the bus today, and overheard a couple of guys talking about their mech games. And I thought to myself, a lot of people around me, a lot of my friends, are gamers. How did it end up that I'm not much of a gamer? Hmmm.

Though recently, there is one game that is amusing me, that was posted to [livejournal.com profile] onepieceyaoi courtesy the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ahja_reyn. Strip Pong.

You heard me. XDDD It's Zoro, and the blocks are the CLOTHES. XDDDDDD
Totally not worksafe, at least if you're good at pong. XDDD Alas, I am not. ;_;

Title: Welcome Home parts 1 and 2
Rating: Part 1 is G, Part 2 is probably PG-13ish
Pairing: Everybody/Usopp. No, really.
Medium: Part 1 in mechanical pencil, rollerball pen and Faber-Castell pen for some outlining. Part 2 entirely in mechanical pencil.

Note: So, here's the long chain of stuff. The lovely sasori_katana wrote a SmoAce story she considered an unusual pairing for her, I commented about writing crack pairings, she ended up opening up prompts for crack pairing drabbles here, I posted a pile of ridiculous prompts, and then she decided to write them all for me, as insane as they were. For which I love her, so much.

The point? She wrote Welcome Home and it was awesome, and for me and so full of EEEEEE (well, I was full of EEEEE), and go here to look at the art if you're interested.

So in one of the comments on the Castle Anthrax pic that I posted at [livejournal.com profile] capslock_op, [livejournal.com profile] _paperpencil mentioned that Gumbys are good at capslocking. It kind of snowballed from there. XD

Thus, I present to you a four-page mini-comic.

Title: And Now, A Sketch About Pirates!
Rating: PG-..13? For language?
Pairings: Sanji/Zoro, nakamaship, and if you squint, Luffy/Usopp/Chopper and Nami/Robin
Medium: Mechanical pencil, Uniball pen, Faber Castell pen, marker

Bring on the pirates! )

I was doodling around in my sketchbook the other day with stick figures, and ended up with a cute little puppy pile nap configuration. So I decided to draw it out in my big sketchbook and color it in. I'm not entirely satisfied, since shading and shadows were a pain to figure out, but I like the soft feel of the color pencils for this scene. Though my need for some sharp edges meant I went over outlines in mechanical pencil anyways. :P

Title: Afternoon Nap
Rating: G
Medium: Mechanical pencil and Crayola color pencils
Pairings: Depends on how you choose to look at it: Nami/Vivi, Luffy/Usopp, Luffy/Zoro, Zoro/Chopper, Sanji/Zoro, nakamaship, OT7...

Warning to folks like me who have dial-up, the image is kinda big. Um, ish.

Luffy stuffed himself at lunch and plopped himself on the foredeck with Zoro, then Chopper joined in and it snowballed from there... )

Concrit, if you feel like giving it, is appreciated. ^_^

So for those of a fannish mind on my flist, just letting folk know that I've gotten into the manga (and anime, but since I have dialup that's not exactly as viable an option) One Piece. Yes folks, I've bounced fandoms from ninjas over to pirates. XD

Anyway, the point of this post is that one of the marvelous authors I've been following, [livejournal.com profile] maldoror_gw (who the lovely [livejournal.com profile] erjika recommended to me when I (and Maldoror, actually) was just getting started in Naruto) wrote a fun little nakamashippy story called "Ring Around," found here. *pimps*

I got inspired and ended up creating a 10-page comic illustrating this story, which can be found here.

Rating is entirely G and worksafe, no pairings but as Maldoror said in her warnings, there is definitely a lot of retaliatory kissing going on. *snerk*

There are two folders in there, because while line art is just the art with minimal edits, the other one I colored in Sanji's suit for contrast purposes, but since I kinda fail at coloring in the lines, the line art is up too. :P

Now cut because I'm going to babble a *lot* about process and the wonderfulness that is Maldoror and her writing ^_^ )
rhythmia: (Default)
Posted because I could not resist. Not exactly for the non-fannish heart, though it might be scarring for the fannish mind all the same:

two related discussions/posts about writing cliched sex scenes and truly awful, brain-scarring word choices. I feel like [livejournal.com profile] yxonomei and [livejournal.com profile] commodoremarie especially would appreciate these, though all are recommended to not have drinks or food in hand or mouth while reading. XD
